The Galerie Le Minotaure, created in 2002, is situated Rue des Beaux-Arts, at the former address of the famous bookshop from whom it preserved its name. His founder, Benoit Sapiro, is fascinated by Russian and Central Europe artists of the first half of the 20th century. Benoit Sapiro dedicated himself to helping rediscover the first half of the 20th Century Russian and Central Europe artists for more than twenty years, with a constant and passionated action.
Founded in 1954 by Jean Fournier (1922-2006), this art gallery still stands up for the choices made by Jean Fournier concerning abstraction but associating it to younger artists : James Bishop, Pierre Buraglio, Didier Demozay, Sam Francis, Simon Hantaï, Pierre Mabille, Jean-François Maurige, Michel Parmentier, Jean-Paul Riopelle, François Rouan, Peter Soriano, Claude Tétot or Claude Viallat mix with younger artists such as Frédérique Lucien, Nathalie Elemento, Stéphane Bordarier, Elizabeth Cooper, Nicolas Guiet and Emmanuel Van der Meulen.
Aimé Maeght (1906-1981) was at the same time an art dealer, a publisher, a movie producer and an art collector as well. He exhibited Braque, Matisse, Léger, Mirò, Tàpies, Chillida, Chagall, Kandinsky, Kelly, Calder, Giacometti, Bram van Velde, Alechinsky Rebeyrolle, Adami, Monory or Ting. With 12 000 titles published, Maeght is now recognized as the most important editor of lithographs and engravings in the world.
The gallery is managed by Isabelle Maeght. The exhibitions enable visitors to see the works of historic artists, but also to discover more contemporary ones : Gérard Gasiorowski, Marco Del Re, Selma Gurbuz, Aki Kuroda, Manolo Valdes or Ernst Scheidegger. The gallery still publishes many books, reproductions, and engravings (prints).
This great place was opened almost one century ago by Sylvia Beach. She was the first one to publish “Ulysse” by James Joyce or to sell banned books in England and in the United States such as “Lady Chatterley’s lover”. During this period, the shop was considered as the centre of American English culture in Paris. Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein or James Joyce stayed there regularly. George Whitman took over from Sylvia Beach in 1951 and then it was the turn of the Beat Generation’s writers to take possession of the premises.
Today, Whitman’s daughter, Sylvia, manages the bookshop which is still a landing place for many travelers of the whole world who can sleep at Shakespeare and Co in exchange for working a few hours there. Students can consult thousands of books, new ones, old ones, and even rare ones, which are piled up and cover all the walls and the shelves.
This gallery presents 5 to 6 annual exhibitions which show the various periods and waves of photography: Denis Brihat, Denis Dailleux, Paul den Hollander, Bernard Descamps, Eric Dessert, Duhiro Ishimoto, Michael Kenna, Bohnchang Koo, Saul Leiter, Laurent Millet, Sarah Moon, Françoise Nuñez, Philippe Pache, Françoise Nuñez, Luis Gonzales Palma, Marc Riboud, Willy Ronis, Paolo Roversi, Pentti Sammallahti, Patrick Taberna, Christopher Taylor, Alexey Titarenko, Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt.
Georges-Philippe and Nathalie Vallois were the first ones to dedicate personal exhibitions to Alain Bublex, Gilles Barbier or Paul MacCarthy in France and they are now on display all around the world. Hervé Loevenbruck fell in love with Saint-Germain-des-Prés . In his gallery he displays many young hopefuls from the French and European contemporary world : Philippe Mayaux, Bruno Peinado, Fabien Giraud, Raphaël Siboni, Virginie Barré, the Irishwoman Blaise Drummond, the Norwegian Gardar Eide Einarsson, the Swiss Cristian Andersen and the Austrian Werner Reiterer, but also already well known artists as the Hungarian Gabor Ösz or Alina Szapoznikow from Poland.
Created in 1959 by Dino Di Meo, this gallery is now run by his brother Nello and by his sister Lydie. In the gallery and in the international art fairs, they show artists who contributed to write art history : Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Henri Matisse, Henri Michaux, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Josef Sima, Jean Degottex, Cy Twombly and the Italian artists of the movement Arte Povera : Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero e Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Mario Merz, Giuseppe Penone , Michelangelo Pistoletto … But also contemporary artists, mostly Italian such as Piero Pizzi Cannella, Gianni Dessi, Giuseppe Gallo, Nunzio and Marco Tirelli.
Publishers specialized in art, fashion and decoration, Martine and Prosper Assouline decided in 2005 to open a bookshop that combines Culture and Luxury, books and objects. We can find there exclusive accessories, curios, personalized gifts … they have opened a new bookshop with the same concept in NYC, at the Plaza Hotel.
This museum is dedicated to the 19th century. It presents painting, sculpture, Art Deco, photography and architecture from 1848 to 1914. This is where you will see some masterpieces such as L’Olympia by Manet, La Petite Danseuse âgée de quatorze ans by Degas or L’origine du Monde by Courbet. This is also the place where you will find the major art movements of this period: the Pompous movement, the Impressionism, the Fauvists, the Nabis, the School of Pont-Aven, the Symbolism, Naturalism and of course the art nouveau with a considerable collection of ceramics, glassware, jewelry and furniture.
Here is another magnificent building created by Jean Nouvel to accommodate an absolutely unique place in Europe dedicated to the Arab and Muslim culture. The Institut du Monde Arabe (Arab World Institute) is more than a simple museum, it is a lively place where we can breathe the air of the Eastern world. An exhibition, a look round the bookshop, a mint tea, a conference … we could almost stay there all day.
This museum is situated in the apartment, in the studio and in the garden where Eugène Delacroix lived until his death in 1853. You will see some beautiful paintings such as the portrait of his faithful Jenny and the gorgeous Madeleine dans le desert that Beaudelaire adored.
