Une grand-mère antiquaire, un père décorateur, des études d’histoire de l’art, Oscar Graf, malgré son jeune âge, a bien le métier dans la peau. Mais il a choisi de s’intéresser à une période bien particulière : la fin du 19ème et le début du 20ème siècle en Europe et aux États-Unis, que son père François-Joseph fut l’un des premiers à défendre. Comme lui, Oscar affectionne ce mouvement japonisant qui opéra en Europe occidentale à partir de 1868, lorsque les ports japonais s’ouvrirent au monde. Ce courant à l’origine de nombreux styles fut interprété très différemment selon les pays et les modes. Des formes presque contemporaines de Godwin aux céramiques de Carriès, en passant par Edouard Lièvre et les Herter Brothers, les arts décoratifs furent bercés pendant presque trente ans par cette culture extrême orientale qui fit bien souvent figure de nouveau monde.

An antique dealer grandmother, a decorator father, art history studies, Oscar Graf, despite his young age, has the job under his skin. But he chose to focus on a very particular period: the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century in Europe and the United States, which his father François-Joseph was one of the first to defend. Like him, Oscar is fond of this Japanese movement which operated in Western Europe from 1868, when the Japanese ports opened up to the world. This current at the origin of many styles was interpreted very differently according to countries and fashions. From the almost contemporary forms of Godwin to the ceramics of Carriès, passing by Edouard Lièvre and the Herter Brothers, the decorative arts were cradled for almost thirty years by this Far Eastern culture which very often appeared as a new world.
